Fractions (Reflections 3.0), 2020

How many moments make up an experience? How many individual contributions are needed to move something effortlessly? My project examines these questions through the colors, shapes and reflections that come together as a group of athletes move a boat through the water. The kinetic, singular actions that contribute to this complete motion serve as a reflection of this moment in time, as well as the broader connection between parts to create a whole.

Beauty or Built?, 2019
Photography (silver gelatin prints), painting (acrylic, watercolor), pastels, audio
Inspired by the words: support, certain, earth
Our society is caught in between two contradicting worlds. One world is the naturally existing, full of lush green grasses, fresh and pure water, the blissful quiet of a calm afternoon and the excitement and energy of a stormy day. The other is the built - proof of the blood, sweat and tears that humans put into the development of roads, buildings, transportation and technological advancements. One world can be classified by beauty and rawness, the other by created and constructed. As the two worlds evolve together, how is one impacting the other? Is it possible to have these spaces and states coexist in a state of symbiosis, or will we face one pushing the other out? In the conversation surrounding climate change, how do these puzzle pieces come together and what is the final picture that they will display?

The world we live in today is certainly not the one that existed 1000 years ago or even 100 years ago. The world 100 years from now will likely not be the same as the one we exist in today as well. While what Earth will look like then still remains to be seen, it is certain though that the decisions made today will have an impact on it. So the question arises, in the face of the different pieces of the puzzle and unknowns over what final image will be created, what role can, should and do we play? How can we support the creation of a future earth that we want?

Beauty or Built? Full Installation

Phases of Installation
Beauty or Built? was designed to be an interactive, multidisciplinary piece - created for Stanford University's foundational Art Practice course, Interdisciplinary Art Survey in the winter of 2019. Combining mediums to facilitate a more robust and dynamic viewing experience, this piece played with visuals, sound and text to draw the viewer into the work. In addition to the silver gelatin prints, the installation included an audio recording of environmental quotes and facts about the dangers of climate change that viewers could listen to while simultaneously viewing the larger piece. Text was further brought into the viewing experience through a written survey that viewers had the opportunity to fill out relating to project themes and discussion. The viewers were then invited to attach their survey to the wall, becoming a part of the installation. Not only did this result in the audience becoming active participants in the project, but it allowed the installation to evolve and transform throughout the exhibit's time span.
